12 Souvenir Coins, 2 players per coin, 1 checklist per coin pack, optional Cardboard Coin holder. |
In 1998, the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan
saw the Canadian team embarrass themselves once again, in spite of a
roster of top Canadian athletes. It's one thing to be individually
great; it's another to play like a team, rather than a bunch of little
prima donnas. But from a collector's viewpoint, it doesn't much matter,
as true McDonalds hockey card collectors need to have these unique gold
colored coins in their
collection. You could request from McDonalds a cardboard "rink" that
the coins fit into to hold your collection. It's just a very bad fit,
and they keep falling out if you try to mount the whole set on the wall.
You also needed two sets, because the reverse sides of each coin had the
other set of players. Then there was the problem that these coins
tarnish easily, so maybe it was just as well to keep them in their
original foil packs or an air tight card holder. Of course, you won't
be able to tell who's in the sealed pack unless you use a bit of
imagination, like placing a piece of paper over the sealed pack, and
rubbing the paper, to see the name of the player appear. Just rub
lightly with a soft pencil or charcoal so you don't degrade the quality
of the sealed foil pack. It's a great set, but demand remains low for
the time being. It's all because the Canadian performance on the ice
was unimpressive and most forgettable. Can you imagine what a set like
this would a brought, if one had been produced in honor of the 1972
Russian series?
